What Does it Mean to be a Radical Christian?
It should be wrong to use the term “Radical Christian”. Christianity shouldn’t be radical. It shouldn’t be “radical” to love others. It shouldn’t be “radical” to take care of others. It shouldn’t be “radical” to accept those that don’t look, think or act like us. But, unfortunately, it is. Jesus was clear about His teachings. We have the greatest commandments: Matthew 22:36-40 Love God, love others. Everything hinges on these two commandments. We have the beatitudes: Matthew

Ask Not…
There is a famous quote from President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address on January 20, 1961. “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” As I lay in bed, whining to God, listing what I wanted him to do for me, my family and my friends, He brought these words to mind: “God, what do YOU want ME to do?” This may not be a revelation to anyone else but for me it cut deep. I always approached prayer thinking of the parable of the persistent

Changing Dreams
I love to write. I also have cognitive impairment. I had dreamed of being a published author and thought my dreams were dead. I thought God was to blame. He COULD heal me. He could take away the schizoaffective disorder, gastroparesis and cognitive impairment. I beg Him every night when I pray that He would. He could make my writing and speaking dreams come true. He could but He hasn’t…yet. I’m in therapy and I have a psychology degree so I keep trying to make sense of my fee

The Joy of Laughter
There is nothing better than a child’s laugh – pure, unadulterated joy. I’m visiting my daughter and celebrating her son’s second birthday. It has been so much fun! Rather than getting a list from my daughter with what to get my grandson, I decided we’d just make it an annual tradition to take him shopping and let him pick out his own presents. I thought it might be crazy with him wanting everything he saw but, even at two, he has likes and dislikes and just picked a few thin

Look Beneath the Surface
Ripples in a pond I am not just what you see. I have strength you cannot imagine. I have endured more than most. I’ve lived through nightmares that haunt me still. You don’t see my struggles but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. You see me smiling and nodding, pretending to understand conversations I can’t follow. You see me successful but not the work it took to get there. My pain is real, even if you don’t see it. I am who I am. I want to like myself. I think of what I’v

I’ll Never Be an Astronaut
Close up of an astronaut uniform with black background I always loved to dream, to think of paths not travelled, to wonder how my life could be different. That has stopped. I’m grieving dreaming or musing about future possibilities. I’ve realized that all my musings aren’t real. The dreams aren’t going to come true. I’m unable to work. I’m past being able to learn new skills. My cognitive impairment has robbed me of that. I’m past the point of being able to do what I dream of
