As I read the words in Matthew describing Peter walking on water to meet Jesus, I see myself in Peter. He stepped out in faith, braving the storm and willing to walk on water to be with Jesus but then he doubted and cried out, “Lord, save me!” and Jesus IMMEDIATELY reached out His hand and caught Peter, saying to him “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” That’s me!
There are two lessons that stand out to me. One, I’m more than willing to step out in faith and yet when it comes to facing the hard things, I doubt God will be there for me. Even though He always is, still I doubt. I want to serve God passionately and exciting doors have begun to open but still I doubt. My love for God is great but my faith can be very small.
Two, Jesus IMMEDIATELY reached out His hand to catch Peter and He IMMEDIATELY catches me. He asks me why I doubt but my doubt doesn’t impact God’s response. Even with Peter’s “little faith” God is there catching him. Even with my sometimes timid steps, sometimes doubting every step I make, skeptical that God will be with me, He catches me. He loves me, forgives me, and will use me even in the midst of storms. Why do I doubt?
Matthew 14:30-31 But when [Peter] noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
